Our Barn Renovation Update

June 10, 2022 by ashleyt 4 Comments

barn renovation curiusprovence
In progress last winter. The oldest part of our barn (the left side with the stone) was built in 1777.

Well, it’s been three years since we bought this property (see the original article here), an old tired farm that has a house and 2 barns on it. The barn above has been our main focus; however, we’ve also spent some time this past winter re-doing another roof, which definitely squeezed our resources.

I haven’t updated much here on the site, you’ll have to forgive me. The process has been so slow (but steady!) that it can sometimes be difficult to know what to write about. For the first year, we basically spent all our spare time getting rid of all the junk left by the previous owners. There were a few fun treasures, including beautiful picture frames, old wine demijohns, rabbit hutches and more. We discovered wine cuves in the ground and stone sinks. I’ll have to photograph them and share them here. I’ve otherwise been sharing videos on Instagram.

Covid of course set us back but so has our stubbornness for using what the French call noble materials. We’re trying to use local and reclaimed materials as much as possible to respect the local architecture and original use of the surrounding buildings. We did this to some extent at our former home, such as sourcing 18th century doors. This can be expensive and not very time-friendly; but this is what will hopefully make our home unique.

Traditional Techniques and Noble Materials

In order to respect traditional techniques, as in our old house, we’ll eventually be using lime wash on the walls instead of paint. We’ve currently installed reclaimed oak beams and wood planks, never as many as we’d like! Sadly we won’t be using the old cheese boards like last time. We’ve sourced and scrubbed by hand 100 year old roof tiles, replacing the more modern tiles that were on the roof when we bought the house. We’ve spent countless hours moving and digging up stones in the garden which will be reused for the garden walls. Our floor tiles are Pierre de Bourgogne and the stone for the gate pillars and the eventual openings on the second barn will be local white stone from Menerbes. We’ve opted for hand-made and local whenever we could including a hand made stair balustrade by a local ironworker and handmade steel doors with insulated frames.

Robin spent weeks creating this self-supporting concrete staircase

The concrete had to be poured all in the same day so it was quite stressful!

Eco-friendly

natural insulation France
The French norms for insulation are 15cm in the roof and 10cm for walls. We did 25cm in the roof and 15cm for the walls
underfloor heating France
Underfloor heating (for eventual use)

In addition to prioritising “noble” materials and traditional techniques, we’ve been trying to be as eco-friendly as our budget will allow. This is of course for the environment as well as avoiding eventual high energy bills! (electricity isn’t cheap in France). We’ve used for the first time a natural insulation product instead of fibreglass. It was 20% more expensive but it’s supposed to be more effective. Time will tell. Since the stone walls aren’t ideal in the barn we’ve decided to insulate it like to crazy! Robin has installed provisions for underfloor heating (we’ll be moving into the barn during the winters) for when we install solar panels in a couple years that will heat the hot water on the property.

We’re currently filling the dipping pool as I type this!

We were hoping that the barn would be ready to rent this June but due to various set-backs it looks like it will be ready instead for mid-September. Robin is now working full time here. We still have a lot to do but things will move along more quickly now… we hope!

We’ve already had some inquiries for bookings next year. We’re so humbled and grateful for your faith in our vision. Despite the fact that it’s still a complete renovation site if you’re interested in reserving for next year we’re going to start taking deposits in the coming week. Don’t worry- it won’t be painted bright pink..ha! To see what it looks like today, see my stories on Instagram.

My Experience Working in a French Restaurant

February 27, 2020 by ashleyt 3 Comments

French waiter
Paris Cafe De Flore Waiter, by Cyril Jayant

Throwback! This is an article that I shared with OneModernCouple about my experience working in a French restaurant in 2016.

The First Day

I tip-toed into the dining area as the sound of the repeated yelling of the words “putain, merde!!” came from the kitchen. The fear that manifested as a slight queasiness intensified as I was faced with the head chef/owner. The commis was looking listlessly at his sunken soufflés. I hoped that I would do better on my first day.

Meeting Expats in Provence

December 21, 2016 by ashleyt 8 Comments

I can’t speak for the entirety of France but if you’re looking for expats in Provence here are a few suggestions.

When I first moved to France I had it in my head that I would only meet French people. I soon learned that in the countryside, meeting any people was a bit tricky. Throw into the equation a lack of funds and a lack of confidence in my French skills…

Let’s just say I didn’t make many friends during my first couple years here! I wanted to find somewhere to learn the language and wondered if there were courses, similar to this AJ Hoge learning course (which helps non-English speakers) that could help me to improve my French. Being an expat is always hard and I knew that going in. I had a friend who moved to Thailand with her family and her young kids were having an awful time trying to fit in until she found a Kindergarten in Bangkok for Internationals and that helped bring them out of their shell. Knowing this, I knew it would be hard at the start but it would get better as I got more confident.

People in Southern France are known to be more closed that people from the North. I’ve known of even French people who move here from other areas and have trouble. Small villages can be the trickiest. Where everyone has grown up together, they’re not jumping to make new friends unless they have a particular interest in speaking English.

After two years, I accepted the fact that I need to do some serious reaching out to other expats. People that have moved here from abroad will automatically have common ground with you. They will often lead to French friends and tips on where in your area to seek friends.

Tellines à la Persillade, a simple market dish

October 27, 2016 by ashleyt 5 Comments

Tellines (pronounced tellEEne)

tellines at the market in provence

There was a little commotion yesterday morning at Saint Remy de Provence market. Gilles, the oyster and mussel vendor, placed a large tub of tellines at the front of his stall. First to notice, with coffees in hand at 8 am, were the other foraines (market workers). Some even stopped in the middle of the bise* greetings to make their way over to Gilles’ stall. Threats were made to keep some for them. The lip-smacking in anticipation for dinner started particularly early.

How to Renovate in France on a Budget

How to Renovate in France on a Budget

So you’ve bought your fixer-upper in France. The romanticism of Peter Mayle has snared you into the dream (or perhaps my blog?). You’re not a millionaire but you’ve got essentially a ruin of stones to work with. At least that’s a start.

You most likely don’t know anyone. You’ve heard horror stories about local tradesmen. Everything in the DIY stores seems more expensive. You’ll have to be careful about your budget…

We had a budget of only 25,000 euros to completely renovate our tiny house. We were able to accomplish this because we did most of the work ourselves. I have to admit, that Robin is a certified tradesman so this helped enormously. His experience really helped us stay within budget.

If you’re planning on doing the same, here are some tips on how you can spend the least amount of money possible while not compromising on your materials or safety building codes.

Before and After Renovation: Living Room

September 2, 2016 by ashleyt 9 Comments

Here are a few pictures of the before and after renovation of our living room. Can you believe the difference? The locals are, unfortunately for us, still so curious that I’m often confronted with a face pressed against our window… But thankfully, everyone seems impressed.

Next we’d love to renovate an enormous Provencal farmhouse with a pool, large rose garden and olive orchard…haha Maybe when we win the lottery. For now, if you need any help in the area- Robin is available starting in October.

The Before and After:

diy renovationUnfortunately we couldn’t keep the wood fire stove as it was dangerously installed. I’m told they work really well. We still don’t have any heating installed; Robin seems to think he’d like to see how cold it gets first. Ha! Spoken like a true Brit. I told him to prepare himself for a grumpy partner if he doesn’t get on it!

L’Occitane Interviews Provence Blogger Curious!

August 22, 2016 by ashleyt 2 Comments

A Provence Blogger

L’Occitane, the creator of lovely soaps and essential oils in Provence, reached out for an interview last month with Curious Provence. A Provence blogger on the rise; they must have found out how much I love this beautiful region that has so much character.

Voici l’article en Français, and in English.

I always used to buy from this company in my native Montréal. Now, I live in such proximity to their lavender fields and almond orchards. Sadly, I didn’t get a box of their products! Maybe next time?…

Renovation in Provence: Kitchen Reveal!

August 2, 2016 by ashleyt 35 Comments

Home Renovation in Provence

These images don’t do the final result justice; everything is also not quite done. However, here is the first version of our almost finished home in Provence. After 8 months of renovation, and with the limited budget and awkward dimensions we had to work with, I’m quite impressed! I never expected our first home to be so beautiful, especially before we hauled out all the old junk that used to be in it. Now it’s away in dumpsters hauled away – it was fairly easy to get the dumpster dimensions we needed to fit near enough to make it easy – out of our home and out of our hassle. And just look at the results! I am so grateful to my man. Bravo Robin!

First Year Anniversary of Curious Provence!

April 8, 2016 by ashleyt 2 Comments

1 Year Curious Provence Blog Anniversary!

Almond Blossom Provence

First Almond Blossom! The first image and post on the site last March

As soon as I moved to Provence with Robin it seemed like just about everyone I knew was pushing me to start a blog about our experience here. I stalled for quite some time, which is a shame as I missed opportunities for great content, for many reasons. Firstly, I had always been someone to shy away from technology on principal. There’s a reason I moved to Europe- give me history and imperfection! I had a hard time grappling with the seemingly narcissistic aspect of writing a blog. I still can’t seem to bring myself to take a selfie. Why would people care about me and my little life?

Picking Cherries in France

May 25, 2015 by ashleyt 5 Comments

La Cerise Curieuse: Blunders of Anglo-Saxons picking Cherries in France:

Expats Newly Arrived in Provence

Robin and I worked at a large property 2 years ago. The enormous gardens were abandoned and left to be engulfed by the wild Provençal countryside. The owners informed us that somewhere off the road there was an entire cherry orchard. Apparently, the trees that hadn’t bore fruit for years. In January, we found this mysterious orchard. It was made obvious by some nomadic shepherds who had roped it off as an enclosure for their donkeys. After a couple weeks, the donkeys moved on and we were distraught to see they had eaten all of the tender red bark off the bottom of the trees!! It was doubtfull that in Spring, we would be picking cherries.
