Cooking Classes in Uzès

I’ve been to about six local cooking classes offered by cooking schools in the Luberon, Alpilles and the Languedoc. I have to say, Le Pistou Cooking School, owned by Petra, is one of my favourite cookery schools in Uzès. 

Petra’s kitchen is located down a little road in the centre of the medieval streets of Uzès, which is in Occitanie, just west of Provence. Uzès is a great stop if you’re visiting the amazing Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct or pottery town of Saint Quentin la Poterie. As cooking classes are held in the mornings, you can visit these places after lunch… that’s if you aren’t too in need of a sieste after all that delicious food and wine…

Petra is an experienced chef informed by her experiences living all around the world including Nairobi, the Netherlands, Ireland and France. That’s quite the mix! A woman of many talents, she has re-invented herself numerous times. After running gourmet retreats in the B&B that she renovated herself in Narbonne, she has now moved to Uzès where she specialises in cooking classes.

Gourmet Cooking Class in Provence

I was recently invited to a full day cooking class at Jean-Marc and Alice Villard’s cooking school in their home at Maubec. #Joblove !! haha. Maubec is located in the Luberon, about 45 minutes from Avignon an hour from Aix en Provence. The class was a wonderful way to spend a day learning about food, wine, and French culture.

The Chef

I have been to many cooking classes for amateurs in Provence and they’re all quite different. Jean-Marc is a professionally trained chef which greatly enriches the experience. He, impressively, taught at the Paul Bocuse Institute in Lyon (gastronomic capital of France) as a Chef Instructor. He certainly knows his stuff!

His classes focus on traditional, though light, French cuisine. His techniques and combinations are based on his classic training as well as Provencal products and cuisine. He’s a strong supporter of local products, which is something you’ll learn about in his cooking class.

Cooking Class Aix en Provence

This autumn, I was lucky to be able to participate in one of Gilles Conchy’s cooking classes in Aix en Provence. Gilles leads English cooking classes in Aix en Provence, Eygalières, and Marseille. Each class focuses on Provençal cooking, with a particular regard for the different traditions of the three areas. For example, the Marseille class often focuses on the famous fish stews of Marseille.

Passionate Gilles is trained as many a French person. His mother, grandmother and the local culture, so respectful of good food, have contributed to his local expertise.
