Cooking Classes in Uzès
I’ve been to about six local cooking classes offered by cooking schools in the Luberon, Alpilles and the Languedoc. I have to say, Le Pistou Cooking School, owned by Petra, is one of my favourites.
Petra’s kitchen is located down a little road in the centre of the medieval streets of Uzès, which is in Occitanie, just west of Provence. Uzès is a great stop if you’re visiting the amazing Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct or pottery town of Saint Quentin la Poterie. As cooking classes are held in the mornings, you can visit these places after lunch… that’s if you aren’t too in need of a sieste after all that delicious food and wine…
Petra is an experienced chef informed by her experiences living all around the world including Nairobi, the Netherlands, Ireland and France. That’s quite the mix! A woman of many talents, she has re-invented herself numerous times. After running gourmet retreats in the B&B that she renovated herself in Narbonne, she has now moved to Uzès where she specialises in cooking classes.
The classes are just the right mix of learning technique, participation (dare to flambé something?) and fun conversation. You’ll meet people from around the world in Petra’s kitchen and eat oh so yummy French food.
Classes offered are “Little Dishes of Provence,” “Classic French” (great if you’re curious about classic sauces and escargot), “fish” (useful!), “truffles,” “vegetarian,” and “cheese and wine pairing.” I attended the Provence cooking class which was interesting for me because there were a few dishes that I hadn’t tried before from the Languedoc region such as the above “Tarte du Soleil.”
Towards the end of the class Petra blew our minds with her homemade cheese. Absolutely stunning. I have made homemade cheese but when I was living in England, I wouldn’t dare in France where there are soo many delicious cheeses. However, Petra proved to us that it’s worth it!
At the end of the morning we sit down together to eat our creations with local wine. Rosé or red anyone?
Cost: 130€ per person
Courses are on demand. Send Petra an email. She has a large cooking repertoire so don’t be shy to ask to learn to make something specific or let her know if you have any allergies.
