Seven Years in Provence

January 19, 2021 by ashleyt 10 Comments

Curious provence Alpilles
An old soul searching for the slow life in Provence.

*2024 update : we’ve now been here for 10 years!

This past autumn, we passed our anniversary of living seven years in Provence. Seven years ago, on a morning with a pastel pink sky, we boarded the ferry from Dover to Calais. It had to be by ferry. It felt more symbolic.

We drove to Burgundy where we stayed in a little Bnb that we found in a tiny village. The architecture was already so different. Dinner was fresh goat cheese that we bought directly from the farm next door and baguette.

The next morning we drove south, south south until we saw the sign on the motorway “Route de Soleil” (the sunshine route). We exited the motorway and followed the map to our destination, which had no address. Of course, we couldn’t find it. We were looking for a château in the middle of seemingly nowhere that would be our new home. The owners were the only people to have answered to our ad on Gumtree looking for work in Southern France. It was a job as guardians. Or, glorified house housesitters. We drove to the nearest winery, bought some rosé to calm our nerves and asked directions. “Ah” they said. “That place?”. The vineyard owner didn’t bother to hide his concerned face.

We found the appriopriate large rusty gates and were greeted by our new employers that looked like something out of a Charles Dickens novel. We had been sent photos of the property that were 30 years old. And, well, the place certainly didn’t look the same…

Our move was a leap of faith. A trust in the world that everything would be alright. With little money, little French, and no contacts we started to build a life here. To be honest, for the first couple years we didn’t know what we wanted. Dreams of running a BnB? Not anymore.

For some odd reason we like to do things the hard way; moving to Provence wasn’t easy. It wasn’t all sweet-smelling lavender. But now we have a home that we’re renovating, friends, our businesses and a sense of belonging. We live in a stunning part of the world. This is not the story of the last seven years. I might have to save that for a book. But, I thought I would use this opportunity to answer a few questions that I’m often asked via email or Instagram.

Maison Vue Provence : Rent this village house in Bonnieux

August 1, 2020 by ashleyt 4 Comments

Recently, we spent a long weekend in a stunning village house in Bonnieux. Maison Vue Provence is owned by an Australian couple, Jenny and Jonathan. Fellow foodies and curious travellers, the first thing that I noticed when we walked into their house was the astoundingly gorgeous view that you can glimpse as soon as you walk in and secondly was the piles and piles of books. I thought I was in Luberon heaven!

Apéritifs to Order in Provence

February 27, 2020 by ashleyt 2 Comments

When you first sit down for a meal in a French restaurant, the server will ask if you’d like to start with an apéritif. This is a refreshing alcoholic drink, other than wine, that stimulates the appetite. Apéritifs were historically composed of a base of certain plants meant to help digestion, like aniseed. A digestif is for the end of the meal and apparently also helps with digestion. These are all possibly excuses to eat more- but I’m not arguing with that!

Our New Home in Provence

December 12, 2019 by ashleyt 25 Comments

home in provence
It ain’t pretty…yet.

Selling our House on Le Bon Coin (in a week!)

After much deliberating, at the beginning of this year we decided to officially put our tiny house up for sale in Maussane-les-Alpilles. The year that followed was an absolute whirlwind.

We were confident our house would sell relatively quickly since there isn’t a lot for sale at the lower end of the market here in Les Alpilles, especially in chic Maussane. Also, did you see how charming it is?

Visit Provence in Winter

March 18, 2019 by ashleyt 2 Comments

Inspiration for visiting Provence in winter, from November-March.
Truffles – Sea Urchins – Long Walks – Horseback Riding – Eating (of course!)

Les Baux de Provence by curiousprovence
Les Baux de Provence on a February evening.

If you follow me on Instagram you might have noticed that I’m trying to start a new hashtag #provenceinwinter because this place is honestly wonderful year-round. The area does become more sleepy after the busy summer season (thankfully!) but there’s still plenty to see, eat and do. The sky in the Camargue often has a pink tint on the horizon and in the Alpilles a dark blue behind the mountains. The air smells of wood-burning fires particularly in the Luberon where the smoke from stunning farmhouses rises in the valleys. The sheep return from their mountain retreats and take over the fields. White flowers bloom between the leafless grape vines and the winter light on the plane trees highlight their goblet shapes. When the Mistral wind is blowing it’s best to stay inside but otherwise it’s quite possible to eat outside at midday. The markets are much smaller but it’s the best markets that are year round as the tourist markets disappear during the winter months. Prices for accommodation are cheaper so you can stay even longer! Rent a villa and cook delicious stews! Here are just a few ideas to inspire your visit to Provence in winter.

CuriousProvence Stickers !

February 2, 2019 by ashleyt Leave a Comment

curiousprovence stickers
Orginal Provence-inspired doodles by Curious. Stickers are 9×6 cm.

Just for fun, I printed some of these fun Provence-inspired drawings onto stickers. Something to brighten up the winter months?

You’ll find 2 drawings of “rosé piscine”, an essential during the Provençal summers. This is where you ask for a large glass of rosé with ice cubes, or “a pool of rosé” perfect for sipping and people watching on a terrace during market day.

There are 3 drawings of heirloom tomatoes (yum!), fish soup, a map of Provence, a 2CV car and of course, lavender.

New Book: Starry Night, Van Gogh at the Asylum

November 28, 2018 by ashleyt 8 Comments

starry night Van Gogh at the asylum

Vincent Van Gogh is a fascinating figure. Learn about his time in a rental institution in Saint Remy with this new book about his time there.

Learn about Van Gogh at the Asylum in Saint Remy de Provence

I have to admit that I didn’t really appreciate the works of Van Gogh before I moved to Provence. I found the bright colours challenging. However, now that I live here I have a profound love of the works of Van Gogh! I just can’t get enough of them. The contrasty, textured paintings perfectly depict this area of Provence. Thanks to this new book, I understand more about Van Gogh’s mental struggles and appreciate his paintings even more.

Saint Paul de Mausole, close to where I live in Les Alpilles, is the mental hospital that Van Gogh checked himself into after cutting off his ear in Arles. If you’re in the area, the asylum is worth a visit and is one place I often bring people on my private tours. If you can’t get here and would like to know more about Van Gogh’s experience at this monastery/asylum, you should read the new book Starry Night, Van Gogh at the Asylum by Martin Bailey.
