Winter 2023 update* I am currently offering a second edition, printed slightly larger on the same paper, edition.
Last month, something magical happened. It was a Monday morning. The sky turned from pink to pale grey, and to my amazement large fluffy bundles of snowflakes started floating down from the sky! Snow is a rare occurrence here in Provence, though we sometimes have a dusting that will last a couple of hours. But this was something else! I looked at my vintage mini and Robin could tell what I was thinking. Do I brave the roads in a whiteout?
Snow in Provence !

Well, this stubborn Canadian just had to get into her antique car and drive 20km an hour with wipers that just tickle the windshield, a trickle of heating and of course no snow tires. My car lights look like candles at the best of times… I was determined to reach my destination; the prettiest village close to me- Eygalières. First stop- Chapelle Sainte Sixte.

The snowflakes were falling in such large bunches that I could hear them when they landed. It was so wondrous to see the almond trees, olives and winter wild flowers covered with heavy snow. After wandering around the chapel, I wanted to head into the village. I wasn’t if my car would get back onto the road, but crossed my fingers and gunned it!

Once safely in the village, with only a couple scares along the road, I found myself in an actual winter wonderland. The terracotta roof tiles and blue shutters of Provence transformed into something extraordinary. I walked in running shoes (I left my boots back in Canada) through the surprisingly deep falling snow. When I got back into the snow-buried car after wandering the medieval lanes and olive groves of Eygalières, I couldn’t turn the ignition because my hands were so numb!
But it was absolutely worth it.
These are the images from that day.
