I know that from my experience in Canada and Britain, If I were to buy wine in a box, I would feel an acute sense of shame. That is not the case in France (well, at least in the countryside in Provence…) Not only have we bought lots of boxed wine here, we’ve bought lots of bidon wine.
Bidon wine (as we call it), or vin en vrac, is the wine that you buy from your local wine cooperative or even some vineyards where you fill up either a 5 litre or 10-litre plastic jug with what is essentially a gas pump. Yes. You thought a bag-in-box was bad? Ha!
