Cyanotypes by Ashley Tinker

This is the original Fleurs Sauvages, Mai series from which 6 were sold at the exhibition.

In addition to the Alpilles Oil Paintings, I spent the spring in the studio of the NG Art Residency creating cyanotypes. This is a old photographic process where light-sensitive chemicals are exposed to the sun, therefore creating one of a kind prints. Using thick watercolour paper, I chose the wild flowers that I found in the surrounding fields in Eygalieres including wild peas, poppies, thlaspi, grasses and more as the subject. These works are incredibly detailed because a brush was used to apply the chemicals rather working with already treated paper. The result is an ethereal painterly effect. Somewhere between paintings and photography. That being said, they’re extremely tricky to photograph and it’s difficult to see the detail here.

Last year, when my mum visited Provence she wanted an oil painting as a souvenir. I brought her to provence artist Grigore.

The Atelier

Last week I was welcomed into the atelier of ceramic artist Martine Guimet located in the beautiful hilltop village of St-Saturnin-les-Apt. I must say that I am quite in love with her work.

Martine makes plaques, tabletops, and sundials out of lava stone from the volcanoes of the Auvergne region of France. She discovered the material when she lived there 25 years ago and has since moved to Provence to interpret her own version of these enameled plaques. Volcanic lava stone is unique because it can support huge shifts in temperature, which is perfect for keeping your plaque outdoors in Provence.
