September in Provence
The bull running, local village fêtes, pastis and rosé drinking aren’t slowing down just yet. Here is my selection of the many events going on this month primarily in the Bouches du Rhône region of Provence. As you can see, I’ve favoured village festivities because these are the hardest to find out about.
September Events in Provence
Marché Potier (Pottery Market) – Cassis
Fête Médiéval du Petit Epeutre (medieval festival to celebrate the cultivation of Spelt) – Monieux
Foire aux Tissus – Fontvieille
9h-18h bazaar for Provencal cloth, tablecloths and clothes
Feria du Riz – Arles
Not a festival celebrating rice- but a festival celebrating everything to do with the Spanish art (including Spanish costumes) of corralling bulls. Many of the performers for this feria are from Spain. People take this very seriously here.
Trophée des Maraîcheurs (festival celebrating local producers of fruit and veg with a rather large pyramid of the produce and bull running events all weekend) – Châteaurenard
Festival du Jazz – St Remy de Provence
Grenache Day (!!)– Fête du Terroir- Cave de Gigondas
Les Journées Européennes du Patrimoine– all over France
Heritage days celebrating local culture, food, history, and architecture.
Just about every single town has free-guided tours given by locals or events. You’ll often have to register at the local tourist office for the tours.
Fête des Olives Vertes – Mouriès
A celebration of the green olive harvest from one of the biggest producing regions of olive oil in France. Olive smashing competitions, horsemanship displays (with bulls of course), markets and vide greniers.
Fête de l’Agriculure Paysanne – La Roque d’Antheron
All kinds of activities and demonstrations about farming life in Provence
Vendange étoilées – Cassis
French chefs battle against each other to pair their dishes perfectly with Cassis wines
This seems to be a very big Vide Grenier day in the Alpilles and around which is useful because you can Vide-Grenier hop!
Check out my article on Provencal vide greniers here. Check out the site for all provence vide greniers all month long here.
- Maussane les Alpilles
- Saint Remy de Provence (vide grenier et brocante)
Fête du Raisin Muscat des Terrasses de Ventoux– Villes sur Auzon
A celebration of the sweet bounty of the Muscat grape
Fête du Miel (honey festival- only producers allowed to sell) – Roquevaire
Fête de la Gastronomie– all of France
All over France there are special meals that celebrate local specialties that contribute to the grand scale of great French food and culture
Fête Votives St Remy de Provence
St Remy’s version of their annual Fete Votive. The town will come alive with running bulls, white horses, parades and a rather impressive amount of Pastis drinking.
Fête de l’Amande (almond festival) – Alleins
Fête de la Gastronomie – St Remy de Provence
Producer’s market, gardening demonstrations for kids and village pic-nic or ‘pique-nique’
Marché de Createurs Tuesday nights- St Remy de Provence
19h-midnight 50 (ish) local artisans sell their artworks and crafts throughout the city.
Rencontres de Photographie– Arles
Great photography festival in Arles that goes until September 20th. Photography exhibits all over the city, mostly in historical buildings.
